We started out the trip in Auxerre, which as you can see is a lovely little
city on the water. We stayed overnight, and just wandered the streets of the
city. | |||

We left Auxerre, and after visiting several random attractions along the
way, arrived in Chablis. We arrived in time for the market, which blocked the
only street through town, so we abandoned the car and walked around the
city center (use of the word 'city' being a bit strong for Chablis, which is tiny). We stopped for lunch in a crazy little bar populated primarily by a large
group of locals sitting around a long table, who had clearly started drinking early, and intended to continue - in fact, later that day we saw them again, at a different place, still drinking. We wandered among the wineries, some of which
were run by people who had been sampling too much of the wares. We also headed
out of town and climbed one of the wine-growing hills.

After leaving Chablis, we headed for a place we had seen some flyers about,
called Guedelon. Guedelon is a castle, being built using methods which
would have existed at the time people were building castles. Thus, for
example, a sort of giant hamster wheel was being used to raise the heavy
blocks, and the blocks themselves were being cut by hand. Other than the
safety goggles and the tourists with digital cameras, it was much like
being on a medieval construction site. The castle is supposed to be finished
in 2023, and you can see in one of the photos below the plans for how it
will look when it is complete.
